Filmmakers are megalomaniacs. They are storytellers who attempt to create worlds inhabited by amazing characters – both real and imagined ones. If they're doing it right we fall in love with them and, consequently, wish to return to these worlds many times over.

Like painting, film is both an incredibly imaginative and meditative form of expression that encapsulates countless ideas. It's a translation from mind to word to sound and images. To me that really is a magical process; one that involves both visionary thinking and happy accidents. A lot can go wrong in filmmaking but sometimes what we get is that perfect succession of frames.

Everyone who loves films the way I do knows what a thrill it is when what illuminates the screen reveals some truth about us and the world we live in.
